Mantra for work.

I believe in fast-moving product development environments where finding value for the user is top priority. When it comes to design people (both your team and your user) are the key. They define the problem, they dictate what works and what doesn’t, and they are the ones that can uncover the solutions. I believe in people. From there you can figure out…

#1 What's your problem?

There are many problems in the world; finding the ones that are worth sweating for is the challenge. Validating that a group of people actually have a problem worth solving is the first step. How are others trying to remedy the problem currently. How are you going to solve it more effectively? If you’re not solving a problem that addresses a real issue, then you’re just making something for you.

#2 Fail fast; move forward.

Iterate fast and understand where you went wrong. Failing quickly helps you hone your ideas and shift focus towards learning what the right path is. Don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid to believe that everything you do will always be successful.

#3 Make it work before you #makeitwork.

You don't put the polyurethane on before the woodworking is complete. You must bake the cake before adding the frosting. You get the idea. You have to create something that has functional value before sprinkling on the aesthetics.

#4 But... the details matter.

That being said, people respond more clearly to things that they perceive as real. Providing something that seems tangible helps you understand the user’s intent more clearly. Thus, giving you a clearer picture into how you can derive greater value for them.

#5 Follow a process that works for you.

In the current era of people evangelizing all sorts of ways to build great products there isn’t a one shoe fits all solution to “how to build product”. Consistently test your process and make adjustments when necessary. Every product and company is unique and finding the best solution for building is an iterative process as team dynamics and the landscape of available tools evolves.

#6 People are the key.

Creating great products takes talent and dedication, but more importantly it takes collaboration and empathy among people. Unlocking the ideas in your head hedges on the greatness (or mediocrity) that you decide to surround yourself with.
